The mystique of the banyan tree...

Banyan trees are considered sacred in Hinduism, a symbol of eternal life. It is believed that Buddha achieved enlightenment while sitting under a banyan tree. The banyan tree trunk, in this original photograph, makes an intricate, complicated, intriguing image. In soft shades of grays, blues and browns, the unusual, sculptural shapes (formed by the way the tree grows) look like works by the sculptor Alberto Giacometti.
